The Chief Medical Officer will provide medical, professional, ethical, and cultural leadership within the emergency and specialty veterinary services. They will also provide overall training, supervision, organization, direction, and evaluation of emergency and specialists. This position will act as a meaningful and operational liaison between clinicians and administration/executive team, work collaborative with the administrative team and reporting to the executive team.

Responsibilities

  • Management of patients within own specialty service
  • Develops, approves, and ensures the standards of care are upheld
  • Oversees veterinarians in regard to procedures, performance, and ethics
  • Assists in veterinarian recruiting, orientation, management, development, and training
  • Oversees clinician scheduling to ensure comprehensive service availability and support
  • Policy development, implementation, and documentation
  • Approves new medication and product requests
  • Maintains awareness of daily operations and assists in proactively addressing problems
  • Oversees laboratory equipment quality control, infection control
  • Develops and promotes a team approach towards problem solving
  • Manages client complaints involving specialty services including interaction with the clients, record review, recommendations for corrective action if warranted, coaching of involved parties
  • Maintains awareness of changing safety and regulatory standards
  • Encourages and measures clinician engagement
  • Assists in balancing the mission with the financial goals of the practice

Qualifications

  • NY State Licensed to practice Veterinary Medicine
  • Diplomate in good standing from applicable specialty college
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with clients, colleagues, and support staff
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including conflict management and relationship building
  • Calm under pressure
  • Flexible, team player, balance
  • Maintains integrity at all times and serves as a mentor and role model for colleagues and staff
  • Manages change successfully
  • Practices mindful leadership
  • Excellent organizational skills, able to complete multiple projects in a timely manner
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize business principles and systems thinking

Preferred

  • 4+ years of experience in management role
  • Formal Leadership Training/education/Continuing education
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and positive response to coaching
