Medical Affairs Director – Veterinary Internal Medicine
Travel Approximately 50%
Are you a board-certified veterinary internist who has built a successful clinical career and is ready to make a broader impact on veterinary medicine? An established and growing animal health company is seeking a Medical Affairs Director – Veterinary Internal Medicine to join its veterinary medical affairs team. This is an opportunity to take your clinical expertise beyond the individual patient and influence how veterinarians across the country recognize disease, approach complex cases, evaluate new therapies, and ultimately improve patient outcomes.
The ideal candidate is an accomplished small animal internist who combines strong clinical credibility with exceptional people skills. Prior animal health industry experience is preferred but is not required. Candidates coming directly from specialty practice or academia will be considered.
The Opportunity
This is much more than a traditional professional services veterinarian position. As Medical Affairs Director, you will become a trusted clinical resource to general practitioners, specialists, key opinion leaders, veterinary organizations, and internal teams. You will help educate the veterinary profession on disease recognition, diagnosis, management, and emerging treatment options while also bringing the practicing veterinarian’s perspective into the company’s commercial strategy and future product pipeline. You will have the opportunity to help build programs and initiatives from the ground up rather than simply step into an established corporate structure. Your expertise will influence Medical Affairs, Professional Veterinary Services, Marketing, Sales, and Research & Development.
What You’ll Do
- Serve as a clinical subject matter expert in small animal internal medicine for veterinarians, specialists, key opinion leaders, corporate partners, and internal teams.
- Educate veterinarians on disease states, diagnostic approaches, treatment considerations, and best-practice medicine.
- Support Professional Services Veterinarians and the field sales organization with advanced clinical expertise.
- Visit general and specialty veterinary practices and engage with veterinarians on complex clinical topics.
- Develop relationships with influential specialists, veterinary medical organizations, academic institutions, and industry leaders.
- Represent the organization at veterinary conferences, trade shows, professional meetings, educational programs, and other industry events.
- Deliver engaging presentations ranging from small-group discussions to larger professional audiences.
- Collaborate with Marketing on educational initiatives, scientific messaging, campaigns, and product positioning.
- Partner with Research & Development and other business leaders to provide clinical perspective on current products and future pipeline opportunities.
- Serve as a resource to other veterinarians within the organization and help strengthen the company’s overall clinical capabilities.
Who We’re Looking For
The right person for this role will have outstanding technical credentials – but technical expertise alone will not be enough.
- A DVM/VMD or equivalent.
- A board-certified small animal internal medicine specialist.
- An experienced clinician who has managed complex cases and understands the realities of veterinary practice.
- Comfortable communicating with both specialists and general practitioners.
- An excellent presenter who can translate sophisticated medical information into practical, understandable guidance.
- Collaborative and able to gain buy-in across different functions and personalities.
- Humble, approachable, and genuinely interested in helping other veterinarians succeed.
- A strong relationship builder with a servant-leader mindset.
- Self-directed and comfortable working in a growing organization where not everything has already been built.
- Interested in contributing beyond Medical Affairs and influencing Marketing, Sales, R&D, and future product development.
- Animal health or pharmaceutical industry experience is preferred but not required. An accomplished internist from private specialty practice or academia who has the right communication skills, business curiosity, and collaborative approach may be an excellent fit.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
For an internist who has spent years treating individual patients, this position offers the chance to influence veterinary medicine on a much broader scale. You can remain deeply connected to medicine while using your expertise to educate other veterinarians, shape clinical strategy, influence future products, and help an entrepreneurial animal health organization continue to grow. The company is employee-owned, providing employees with the opportunity to participate directly in the long-term success they help create.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary: $150,000-$195,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
