Director Animal & Public Health / Public Policy Strategy
The Director Animal & Public Health is responsible for providing the creative vision, subject matter expertise and leadership that is required to plan, develop, implement and manage association activities. The Director will make recommendations regarding actions that support strategic objectives related to animal and public health, with a focus on proactive and timely delivery of policies, programs and resources that are innovative, thoughtfully developed and deliver clear value. Topics and areas include pharmaceuticals, biologics, medical devices, animal health and disease, food safety (animal products and animal feeds), agricultural production, emergency preparedness and response, aquatic veterinary medicine, environmental concerns (e.g., biohazardous waste disposal), and occupational safety. The Director leads and supports staff in working collaboratively and effectively with volunteer entities, staff in other functional areas within the Public Policy Strategic Business Unit, and staff to achieve approved objectives.
As a member of the leadership team, the director provides important input into the development of objectives, policies and programs and has a significant role in their implementation. The director has direct responsibilities associated with the development and implementation of policies and programs with animal and public health components. The director supports the Chief Veterinary Officer in the development, integration and implementation of policies and programs that achieve the overarching strategic objectives for the Public Policy business unit.
The Director of Animal & Public Health/Public Policy Strategy plans and oversees division activities, working collaborative with the division staff and the Chief Veterinary Officer. The Director leads staff and provides liaison support for assigned governance entities, and ensures that those entities’ interest, concerns, decisions and recommendations are shared when appropriate among Division staff, with the Veterinary Officer and other teams when needed.
The Director of Animal & Public Health/Public Policy Strategy provides oversight for activities, projects and programs undertaken by the division and develops and manages the division’s budget. The Division Director mentors and manages staff, encouraging creativity, collaboration and accountability. The director assigns staff responsibilities and conducts performance management of all direct reports.
Qualifications include a DVM/VMD with experience in veterinary practice and/or business with demonstrated success in a leadership role. 7+ years of relevant experience is required along with demonstrated scientific understanding of topics for which the Division has responsibility. Other qualifications include being diplomatic, innovative, proactive, professional, accountable and results-driven. Our ideal candidate is enthusiastic, collaborative and team-oriented. Other qualifications include working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong supervisory and project management skills. The successful candidate must be able to travel up to 20% and must be able to work outside of normal business hours as needed. Experience working for an animal health pharmaceutical company, regulatory agency or an association background would be relevant for this role.
