Position Overview

The VET Recruiter is conducting a search for an experienced Hospital Director to lead a large, sophisticated veterinary hospital in the Greater Boston area.

This established, multi-service hospital provides general practice, specialty, and emergency veterinary care. The organization seeks an accomplished operations leader who can drive financial performance, build a strong leadership culture, and ensure operational excellence. Regional or multisite leadership experience is especially valued.

Executive Leadership & Team Development

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for a large, multi-service veterinary hospital.
  • Lead, coach, mentor, and develop department managers and operational leaders.
  • Establish expectations, promote accountability, and foster a positive, collaborative workplace culture.
  • Build relationships with veterinarians, specialists, department leaders, and support staff.
  • Maintain a visible, engaged leadership presence throughout the hospital.
  • Navigate complex interpersonal dynamics with diplomacy, judgment, and emotional intelligence.
  • Empower department leaders to own team performance and operational outcomes.

Financial & Operational Management

  • Own hospital financial performance, including profit and loss (P&L) management.
  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and operating performance.
  • Monitor KPIs including revenue growth, profitability, efficiency, and patient visits.
  • Improve financial results, optimize resources, and support sustainable growth.
  • Ensure operational excellence across departments and service lines.

Collaboration & Client Experience

  • Partner with medical and operational leadership to align business and clinical priorities.
  • Build productive relationships with highly skilled veterinary specialists and other medical professionals.
  • Balance financial expectations with excellent patient care.
  • Champion client service and improve the client experience.

Qualifications

  • At least five years of progressive leadership experience with substantial responsibility for complex operations and teams.
  • Demonstrated success leading other managers and developing leadership teams is essential.
  • Regional, multisite, or large-scale hospital operations leadership strongly preferred.
  • Single-site leaders should have overseen a large, complex operation, ideally with 200 or more employees.
  • Strong financial acumen and direct responsibility for budgets, financial results, and P&L.
  • Ability to influence and hold leaders accountable while maintaining constructive relationships.
  • Exceptional emotional intelligence, communication skills, interpersonal awareness, and executive presence.
  • Veterinary industry experience is preferred but not required; human healthcare and other relevant complex service industries will be considered.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The successful candidate is a confident, approachable, highly engaged leader who understands that operational discipline and strong interpersonal relationships are equally important. This person reads situations accurately, communicates diplomatically, navigates challenging conversations, and earns credibility with medical professionals.  This leader is visible throughout the organization rather than managing solely from an office and combines strategic thinking with practical execution.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: $125,000–$149,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • Performance bonus: based on performance; paid quarterly.
  • Bonus metrics include financial and operational results such as revenue growth, margins, and patient visits.
  • Comprehensive benefits include medical, dental and vision insurance, paid time off, retirement benefits, and professional development.

Why Consider This Role?

Lead a sophisticated veterinary healthcare operation, collaborate with talented medical professionals, shape operational strategy, develop future leaders, and make a meaningful impact on culture and performance.
