Chief Medical Officer – Veterinary Medicine – # 9870

Chief Medical Officer – Veterinary Medicine – # 9870

The VET Recruiter is conducting a search for a Chief Medical Officer for a growing veterinary organization. This is an opportunity for an accomplished veterinarian and proven leader to influence the future of veterinary medicine across a multi-location organization while making a meaningful impact on veterinarians, hospital teams and the profession.

The ideal candidate is a veterinarian who has demonstrated success in clinical practice and veterinary leadership. Experience as a veterinary practice owner is highly desirable, along with leadership experience as a Medical Director, Regional Medical Director, senior veterinary executive or comparable leadership role.

The Opportunity

The Chief Medical Officer will serve as a highly visible veterinary leader responsible for advancing medical excellence, veterinarian engagement, leadership development, innovation and technology adoption throughout the organization.

This individual will have the opportunity to shape how veterinary medicine evolves across the organization while helping veterinarians and hospital leaders reach their full potential. Rather than simply establishing policies, the CMO will build relationships, develop leaders, introduce new ideas and help veterinary teams find practical solutions to real-world clinical and operational challenges.

A key component of the role will be identifying, mentoring and developing the next generation of veterinary leaders. The CMO will help veterinarians recognize what is possible in their careers and provide the coaching, resources and perspective necessary for them to grow as clinicians and leaders.

The successful candidate will also be forward-thinking and curious about the changing veterinary landscape. The CMO will explore emerging technologies, new approaches to clinical practice and other innovations that can improve veterinary medicine, strengthen hospital teams and enhance the experience of veterinarians and their clients.

A Relationship-Driven Leadership Role

Relationships are central to this position. The Chief Medical Officer will be a visible and accessible presence throughout the organization, spending meaningful time with veterinarians and hospital teams and remaining closely connected to the realities of clinical practice.

This leader will listen to doctors, understand the challenges they face and become a trusted resource when hospitals encounter complex medical, leadership, regulatory or operational issues.

Success will require more than clinical expertise. The CMO must possess the credibility, judgment and interpersonal skills to earn the confidence of veterinarians and leaders throughout the organization. This individual should be someone veterinarians respect, seek out for guidance and trust as a voice for medical leadership.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a veterinarian who combines clinical credibility with strong business and leadership acumen. Qualifications include:

  • DVM or VMD degree
  • Significant veterinary clinical experience
  • Previous leadership experience as a veterinary practice owner, Medical Director, Regional Medical Director, senior veterinary leader or comparable role
  • Practice ownership experience is strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated success mentoring, coaching and developing veterinarians and veterinary leaders
  • Strong understanding of veterinary hospital operations, financial performance, staffing and leadership
  • Exceptional relationship-building and communication skills
  • Experience navigating complex clinical, operational and leadership challenges
  • Strong interest in technology, innovation and the future of veterinary medicine
  • Ability to influence and inspire others while building trust across an organization
  • Strategic mindset combined with the ability to translate ideas into practical solutions
  • Passion for advancing veterinary medicine and strengthening the veterinary profession

Location & Travel

The Chief Medical Officer must be located near a major airport and be comfortable traveling approximately 40% or more to maintain a meaningful presence with veterinarians and hospital teams.

Preferred geographic locations include Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Dallas, Austin or Miami.
