If you’re conducting an analysis of your current job situation, which criteria should you consider? After all, making the decision to look for a new job is a big step. It involves a tremendous commitment of time, energy, and effort, and therefore, it shouldn’t be taken lightly.
However, there’s one factor that’s bigger than most, and that factor is passion, specifically passion for what you’re doing. Just because you’re in the industry you’ve always wanted to be in, that doesn’t mean you have passion for what you’re doing right now. Ideally, you want your job to be exciting. You want to be eager to go to work every day. If it’s boring or monotonous, then eagerness might be difficult to come by. Some of you may already know this from personal experience.
A job about which you’re passionate is not only exciting, but it’s also challenging. You want what you do to stimulate you on a number of different levels—mentally, emotionally, psychologically, etc. That’s what creates true passion. So with all of that in mind, ask yourself the following questions:
- Is my job exciting?
- Is my job challenging?
- Does my job motivate me?
- Am I eager to go to work?
- Do I have passion for what I’m doing?
More than anything else, your answers to these questions should give you an idea of whether or not you should stay where you are . . . or look for greener (and more passionate) pastures.
