The Difference Between an Employment Agency and an Executive Search Firm

by Stacy Pursell, CPC, CERS

The VET Recruiter®

The VET Recruiter is an executive search firm and professional recruitment firm operating in the Animal Health industry and Veterinary profession. The VET Recruiter is not an employment agency. There is a difference.

That doesn’t mean that I have anything against employment agencies. I have a lot of respect for what these organizations do and how they operate. Regardless, I felt it was necessary to draw a distinction between the two in the interest of clarifying what The VET Recruiter does and the value that it provides within the employment marketplace.

So . . . what is the difference between the two?

Employment agency vs. executive search firm

At a glance, it might seem as though that an employment agency and an executive search firm perform the same tasks. However, looks can and are deceiving, especially in this case. It is true that both an employment agency and an executive search firm fill open positions with qualified personnel. But it’s their approach and the manner in which they do this that separates them apart.

Employment agency

For the most part, an employment agency focuses on helping job seekers find new employment opportunities. In addition, these jobs are often blue-collar opportunities, although some of the positions are office jobs. While some of these opportunities are full time, many of them are temporary in nature or they’re contract assignments, meaning that the job seekers will work for a specified amount of time and their assignment will end.

Executive search firm

And in contrast, an executive search firm works, first and foremost, for their clients, those employers that are actively seeking to fill their most important job openings. A search firm like The VET Recruiter works for their clients, the companies that hire us to find them top talent. It is true that we at The VET Recruiter also want to help job seekers and job candidates find better employment opportunities. However, our clients have engaged us and charged us with the task of finding and recruiting the top 5% to 10% of the candidates in the marketplace.

Keep in mind that our clients are not asking us to find the top 5% to 10% of candidates who are actively looking for a new job. No, they want us to find and recruit the top 5% to 10%, period, whether they’re actively seeking a new position or not. And that is one of the most important distinctions in this difference. Executive search firms seek out passive candidates, while employment agencies sometimes wait for job candidates to come to them seeking employment.

That does not mean that the only job candidates we place are passive candidates. We sometimes place top candidates who just happen to be looking for better employment opportunities. However, as a general rule, executive search firms like The VET Recruiter target passive candidates who are being treated well and are highly regarded by their current employer.

The best of both worlds

What does this mean for you in terms of your Animal Health or Veterinary career? It means that when you choose to work with The VET Recruiter, you get the best of both worlds. What does that mean, exactly? It means the following:

  • You don’t necessarily have to conduct an active job search to be considered for job opportunities with The VET Recruiter. That’s because if we have your resume or know who you are, we can let you know when we come across a job opportunity that could be the next step in your career.
  • You can focus your efforts on your current employment situation, keeping us apprised of changes to your professional life and career.
  • When we present a new employment opportunity and that opportunity appears better than your current job, we will coach you through the entire process, providing advice, tips, and feedback to better position yourself and your candidacy.

So as you can see, although The VET Recruiter works first and foremost for employers in the Animal Health industry and Veterinary profession, there are tremendous advantages to aligning yourself with our executive recruiting firm. The VET Recruiters works with many of the top employers in the Animal Health and Veterinary marketplace, and we have relationships with the hiring managers at those organizations. The VET Recruiter’s mission is to help Animal Health and Veterinary companies hire top talent, while helping Animal Health and Veterinary professionals attain career-enhancing opportunities that increase their quality of life.

So, while we have great respect for employment agencies, The VET Recruiter is an executive search and professional recruiting firm dedicated to finding top talent for our clients who are involved in the Animal Health and Veterinary Industry.

If you’re looking to make a change or explore your employment options to grow your Animal Health or Veterinary career, then we want to hear from you. I encourage you to contact us or you can also create a profile and/or submit your resume for consideration.

We help support Animal Health and Veterinary careers in one of two ways: 1. By helping professionals to find the right opportunity when the time is right, and 2.
