Veterinarian Surgeon – Chicago, IL
We are seeking a highly experienced Veterinary Surgeon to join a team of passionate, focused doctors. Our client serves homeless animals and clients requiring low cost care on the Southwest side of Chicago. The hospital’s doctors are supported by a team of amazing technicians and assistants with many years of veterinary medicine experience. The medical center hosts a large surgical suite along with in-house IDEXX lab diagnostics, digital radiology, ultrasound, and a therapeutic K-Laser; expansions are underway to add additional surgical suites.
The surgeon is responsible for care of all surgical patients and ensuring all clinic staff members are adhering to proper pre-, peri-, and post-operative care of patients. The ideal veterinarian has a passion for building No Kill communities and solving pet overpopulation. This position has a focus on high quality high volume spay/neuter surgeries and occasional soft tissue surgery. Typical surgery case mix includes dental extractions, mass removals, amputations, wound repairs, optic surgeries, and occasional emergency surgeries.
Responsibilities
- Perform surgical and medical care for shelter animals based on need and capabilities
- Manage anesthetic and surgical complications
- Make responsible medical decisions based on available resources
- Follow and support all organizational and medical protocols
- Communicate, consult, and collaborate with veterinarians, technicians, and colleagues
- Be a leader among staff, displaying a positive attitude and acting as a motivating force for all staff members
Requirements
- Licensed Veterinarian in the state of Illinois
- At least one year spay/neuter surgery experience
- Able to perform cryptorchid neuters and difficult spay surgeries such as pyometra, dystocia, in heat, obese, and large patients
- Mobile surgical experience not required, but preferred
- Demonstrated passion and prior experience working with homeless animals and/or underserved communities preferred
- Must be able to work standing or sitting for 8 or more hours
