Research and Development, Senior Principal Scientist, Nutrition and Animal Science. The Research and Development Senior Principal Scientist, Nutrition is responsible for leading the nutrition and animal science team in a pet snack and pet food organization. The successful candidate will ensure the nutritional compliance and animal safety of all pet snacks and pet food. The successful candidate will provide technical thought leadership internally and will be an Industry Liaison for the company in the areas of nutrition, animal safety and animal health. This position in on the technical track and the incumbent will be responsible for the training, coaching and development as well as the administrative management for the nutrition and animal science team. The scientist will provide overall nutritional and animal safety guidance within research and development and will ensure the team provides the timely review of all product formulations for nutrition and animal health. The scientist will review and approve all products that require animal safety assessments. The scientist will provide guidance on nutrition and animal safety claims feasibility and substantiation requirements. The scientist will review and approve animal safety claims. The scientist will develop internal guidance documents on relevant nutrition and/or animal safety topics and will develop and deploy training to research and development on nutrition and/or animal safety topics. The scientist will be a consultant to regulatory for federal/state regulatory issues/inquiries related to nutrition, animal safety and animal health. The scientist will interface with internal and external stakeholders and industry associates. The scientist will collaborate on clinical studies as needed to answer targeted nutrition and/or animal safety questions and/or substantiate product claims.
Qualifications include a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, with specialty training in internal medicine or clinical nutrition residency and/or an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Companion Animal Nutrition. Other qualifications include at least 3 years of relevant experience and/or education post DVM degree. Experience as a practicing Companion Animal Veterinarian is preferred. Experience working/interfacing with Industry, Professional and Government organizations is a plus.The successful candidate will be recognized as an internal though-leader and expert in the field and will be familiar with commercial formulation software. The successful candidate will be familiar with pet food manufacturing capabilities and limitations and will have strong collaboration skills and experience partnering within and outside of research and development. The successful candidate will have the ability to synthesize relevant knowledge/data and effectively communicate to a variety of stakeholders. Other requirements entail ability to work in a high-paced, fluid environment, providing accurate information frequently on short timelines. The successful candidate will have the ability to handle multiple tasks and projects, have experience leading/managing a team and be willing to maintain a current and active veterinarian license in the US.
