You Need THIS for Your Career, Not Another Resolution

Are you “so over” New Year’s Resolutions?

If so, who could blame you? After all, less than 10% of the people who make resolutions actually stick to them throughout the entire year. Not only that, but almost half of the people who make them have failed before the month of January is even over.

So—what’s the point?

There is no point, really. The fact of the matter is that you should be approaching every year the same way, not needing to make resolutions in order to accomplish your goals.

Sure, there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a feeling of newness on January 1 and being galvanized by the prospect of a “fresh start.” But why wait until then to do the things you should already be doing?

And on the heels of that question, here’s another one: what does all of this have to do with your career in the New Year?

Just like people make personal resolutions, they also make resolutions for their career. However, they don’t need a resolution for their career. That’s because less than 10% of people actually stick to their resolutions.

What you need is a PLAN for your career, not another resolution, and below are three words that should describe your career plan:

Things do not just “magically” happen. You have to make them happen, and when it comes to career growth and development, that means taking risks, including taking a step outside of your current organization to find your next growth opportunity.

While it’s good to plan, it’s also advantageous to realize that circumstances and situations are in a near-constant state of flux. As a result, adjustments to the plan might be necessary. However, the goals of the plan should remain in focus, with corresponding appropriate courses of action.

You can’t do anything about the past, and you can’t predict the future. However, there is a LOT you can do in the present. Today is literally where all the action is. Make the most of every moment in the present, and incorporate that philosophy into your career plan.

So forget about resolutions. What’s your plan? What are you going to do this year to advance your career and take your skills, abilities, and talents to the next level?

What are you going to do today—right now—to be proactive about improving your career and improving your life, both for you and for your loved ones?

We help support careers in one of two ways: 1. By helping to find the right opportunity when the time is right, and 2. By helping to recruit top talent for the critical needs of organizations.  If this is something you would like to explore further, please send an email to stacy@thevetrecruiter.com.
