Research and Development Scientist, Nutrition

Research and Development Scientist Nutrition.  The Research and Development Scientist, Nutrition will work to ensure the nutritional compliance for Pet Food and Pet Snacks Products. The scientist will review product formulations and claims and provide guidance related to nutrition and animal health. The scientist will partner closely with Product Developers in Research and Development as well as with cross-functional partners in legal, regulatory, consumer affairs, quality assurance and marketing on nutrition and animal health related topics. The scientist will provide overall nutritional guidance within Research and Development. The scientist will provide timely review of all product formulations for nutritional compliance and will formulate pre-mixes and blends. The scientist will provide guidance on new and existing ingredients and ingredient specifications and will collaborate with partners to ensure nutrient database accuracy. The scientist will provide guidance on nutrition claims feasibility and substantiation requirements and will support the development of internal guidance documents on nutrition. The scientist will support the development of nutritional training materials and will be a consultant to regulatory for federal/state/regulatory issues and inquires related to nutrition.

Qualifications: A Master’s Degree in Animal Nutrition is required. A PhD in Companion Animal Nutrition is preferred. Other qualifications include familiarity with federal, state and local pet food regulations, fundamental knowledge in food processing and food science. The successful candidate will be proficient in commercial Pet Food formulation software, have an understanding of ingredient nutrient delivery (bioavailability, nutrient-nutrient, ingredient-nutrient and process-nutrient interactions), knowledge of common forms of ingredients used in pet foods, nuances of pet food formulations and ingredients, have a skilled understanding of Windows based application system to maintain ingredient nutrient, cost and formulation target and constraint data. Other qualifications include strong collaboration skills and experience, ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing and ability to handle multiple tasks and projects.
