Chief Veterinarian – Hawaii
The incumbent will supervise and perform healthcare to ensure the sheltered animals are receiving constant humane care and are provided with quality health care and surgical procedures at all times. The Chief Veterinarian will adhere to the highest ethical standards and ensure that veterinary care is provided in a safe, competent, professional and humane manner.
The incumbent will supervise the veterinarians to provide adequate personnel during hours of operation and high/quality and professional standards of care. The incumbent will evaluate, create and coordinate training and handle the development needs of staff to assure professional standards of performance and will provide professional advice and opinions regarding the development and implementation of educational and enforcement programs. The incumbent will prepare and submit proposed department budgets, secure equipment and supplies and oversee the efficient and cost effective operations of the veterinary clinic in accordance with the established budget. The incumbent will direct and review account and reports of all activities in the department.
The Chief Veterinarian will oversee medical procedures, treatment and drugs which include providing strategic insight and planning to help bring innovative and progressive ideas related to animal health and veterinary care to the organization. The Chief Veterinarian will develop and recommend medical protocols and oversee implementation and establishment of approved policies and procedures for effective disease control/management treatment and surgery, the use, control and recording of drugs, supplies use in department. The Chief Veterinarian will supervise and train relevant staff to perform euthanasia of admitted animals based on medical issues and according to the organizations procedures. The incumbent will perform sterilization surgery and veterinary healthcare services of all shelter animals.
The incumbent will assist in medical forensics for cruelty investigations which includes performing physical examinations/necropsies, developing treatment protocols, providing testimony and documentation of the condition of animals that are involved in cruelty investigations, assists with coordination of external resources related to the development of veterinary related evidence as needed.
The Chief Veterinarian will handle personal and professional development and will continue to educate oneself concerning veterinary medicine, animal welfare and staff supervision and will keep abreast of veterinary and shelter medicine trends.
The Chief Veterinarian will inform the public concerning questions of healthcare, welfare and conditions of animals at the society and will treat all animals humanely, properly and with compassion. The Chief Veterinarian will speak with groups of people including the public, staff, media and law enforcement agencies concerning the services and veterinary care and will serve as a professional liaison to the community veterinarians.
Qualifications include a DVM and current Hawaii veterinary license, 2+ years of clinical practice experience post-graduation. The successful candidate must have a passion and concern for both animals and people, be committed to the organizations goals, objectives and programs, have a demonstrated ability to maintain a compassionate attitude in providing humane veterinary care for animals, have a demonstrated ability to analyze shelter sanitation and disease prevention problems and to make qualified recommendations. The successful candidate will have no limitations to prevent themselves from working with animals and performing surgery. The position requires detailed written work, patience and tact, a professional and courteous attitude, speaking and writing ability, ability to speak in front of a group and ability to train, organize and supervise staff and volunteers.
