No matter how satisfied you are with your current employment situation, it’s always a good idea to “audit” your employer.
That sounds serious, but what exactly does that mean?
It’s not as serious as it sounds. However, when taken into the larger context of your career, it simply means asking questions that will help you to advance your career—whether that advancement happens at your current employer or with another company.
With that in mind, ask yourself these four healthy questions about your employer:
- Are you excited about going to work every day? Do you look forward to it? Is the company culture conducive to creating excitement among its employees? Do you enjoy what you do on a daily basis?
- What kind of work/life balance do you have? Is there truly a balance, or is the situation more lopsided than you would like it to be? If it’s lopsided (and not in your favor), is there anything you can do to regain more balance?
- Does your company offer opportunities for advancement? If so, what are they? Are you able to take advantage of these opportunities? If not, why not?
- Does your employer have clearly defined goals for success and continued growth? If so, what is your role in its plan for achieving that growth and success?
That’s all it takes: just four simple questions that can help you to “audit” your current employer and give you a better idea of where you stand in your quest for career advancement.
After asking these questions, you could be convinced that where you’re working right now is the best place for you. However, if you’re not, your course of action could involve moving to a new employer, one that will ultimately provide you with the advancement and satisfaction you’re seeking.
