Everybody wants a job that’s fulfilling, challenging, and rewarding. Not only that, but everybody believes (or hopes) that they’re doing everything in their power to achieve that goal.
However, for those who are currently yearning for more career satisfaction by searching for another opportunity, chances are good that they’re limiting their job search. Unfortunately, they don’t even realize that they’re doing it.
A recent article by Andrea Kay of USA Today, “At Work: Your Skills Open More Doors Than You Think,” addresses this topic. Kay uses rather unique examples to make her point, alluding to jobs as a wild horse and burro program director and an oyster restoration outreach assistant.
However, that point is a valid one: job seekers often miss out on premium opportunities because they don’t open themselves (and their minds) up to greater possibilities.
This is where Kay reaches the “meat and potatoes” of her article, listing three questions that job seekers should ask themselves in order to increase the chances that they’ll find their ultimate career opportunity. Those questions are as follows (and Kay indicated that they should be in this order):
Question #1—What do I actually do best of all?
Question #2—What do I care about?
Question #3—Who needs people like me?
One of the most crucial parts of a successful job search is knowing where to look. By asking these three questions—and answering them—your search will be more targeted and ultimately, more accurate.
