The face-to-face interview is one of the most important stages of the recruiting and hiring process. That’s because it represents the opportunity for both the job candidate and the employer to make the best possible impression upon each other.
And yes, both the candidate and the people who are interviewing the candidate should strive to “put their best foot forward” and make a favorable impression. This is especially the case in a candidate-driven market like the one that we’re currently experiencing. And even though candidates today hold the majority of the leverage in hiring situations, you should still brand yourself in the best way possible during the interview.
This branding effort includes your answers to whatever questions the interviewers ask, and one frequently asked question is, “Why should we hire you?”
Key elements of your response
This question is important because it provides you with a platform to highlight your unique qualifications, skills, and experiences that align with the position and make you stand out from other candidates. As you might imagine, there are four key elements to consider when responding to this question:
#1—Understanding the organization and job requirements
Before formulating your response, it’s crucial to thoroughly research the organization and understand the specific requirements of the job. Review the job description, company values, mission statement, and any available information about the organization’s culture and goals.
By gaining a comprehensive understanding of the organization’s needs, you can tailor your answer to address their specific pain points and demonstrate how you can contribute to their success.
#2—Identifying your unique selling points (your value)
Reflect on your skills, experiences, and accomplishments that make you a standout candidate for the position. Consider your technical expertise, soft skills, industry knowledge, and any relevant certifications or qualifications.
Look for unique selling points that differentiate you from other candidates and align with the organization’s needs. These can include specific achievements, past successes, leadership abilities, problem-solving skills, or a strong track record. Identify two to three key points that you want to emphasize in your response.
#3—Aligning your skills and experience with the job requirements
Once you have identified your unique selling points, carefully align them with the specific requirements of the job. Highlight how your skills and experiences directly address the challenges and responsibilities outlined in the job description.
Use specific examples and quantify your achievements whenever possible to demonstrate the impact you have made in similar roles or projects. By showcasing your ability to meet and exceed the expectations of the role, you provide compelling evidence for why you are the ideal candidate.
#4—Showing enthusiasm and cultural fit
In addition to technical qualifications, employers often seek candidates who will fit well within their organizational culture. Express your enthusiasm for the company and the position during the interview.
In addition, highlight any relevant experiences or values that demonstrate your alignment with the company’s culture and mission. Employers are not only looking for candidates with the necessary skills, but also for individuals who will thrive within their team and contribute positively to the organization’s overall environment.
A blueprint for your response
Now that you know which elements should comprise your response to this interview question, let’s incorporate these elements into your response in a step-by-step format. In fact, below is a blueprint for how you should frame and deliver your response:
Introduction: Begin your response by expressing your appreciation for the opportunity to interview and your enthusiasm for the position and the organization. This sets a positive tone and shows genuine interest in the role.
Unique selling points (your value): Highlight your unique qualifications and experiences that directly align with the job requirements. This can include technical skills, achievements, relevant industry experience, or a proven track record of success. Be concise and specific, focusing on the most relevant points that demonstrate your value.
Linking your selling points to the organization’s needs: Connect your unique selling points to the organization’s specific needs and pain points. Discuss how your skills and experiences directly address the challenges outlined in the job description. By doing so, you demonstrate your understanding of the role and showcase how you can contribute to the company’s success.
Demonstrating your overall fit: Emphasize your enthusiasm for the organization and the position. Highlight any shared values, cultural alignment, or previous experiences that illustrate your ability to work well within the team and the company’s overall environment. Show that you are not only qualified for the job, but you’re also a good fit for the company’s culture.
Wrapping it all up: Conclude your response by summarizing your key points and reiterating your enthusiasm for the opportunity. Express your eagerness to contribute to the organization’s goals and your confidence in your ability to excel in the position.
Perhaps most importantly, remember to practice your response to this question beforehand. And of course, you should practice answering other questions, too, to ensure that you perform well during the interview and can move one step closer to receiving an offer of employment.
