There is perhaps no industry or profession growing more rapidly in the United States or around the world right now than the Veterinary profession. That was true before the COVID-19 pandemic started, and it rings even more true today. That’s because the pandemic has helped to create unprecedented demand for Veterinary products, goods, and services. This demand, in turn, has created thousands of new veterinarian jobs, and veterinarian job growth is projected to continue for the next several years.
The growth of veterinarian jobs
According to information released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in September of 2021, veterinarian jobs are projected to grow by 17% between the years 2020 and 2030. To put that another way, there will be 17% more veterinarian jobs in the employment marketplace in 2030 than there were just 10 years before. And these represent new job openings, not existing jobs that practices and organizations need to fill because an employee resigned or left for some other reason. The problem, of course, is that just because there will be 17% more jobs in 2020, it doesn’t mean there will necessarily be 17% more professionals available to fill those positions. In fact, just the opposite is likely to be the case.
The Veterinary industry is already suffering from a lack of qualified candidates to fill employers’ urgent hiring needs. There are a number of factors contributing to this ongoing phenomenon. First, Veterinary schools are not producing enough graduates to keep pace with burgeoning demand. It’s a simple formula. If there are more job openings created each year than there are Veterinary graduates, then the discrepancy between the overall number of open veterinarian jobs and the number of professionals available to fill those jobs will continue to grow wider with each passing year.
Second, people are continuing to spend more money on their pets on a year-over-year basis. This spending includes Veterinary care and services and Pet products, including Pet tech. During the pandemic, many people who did not already own pets decided to adopt or acquire a pet. In addition, many people who were already pet owners decided to acquire another pet or multiple pets. Because of the pandemic, pet owners were spending more time at home with their pets, meaning that they were in touch with their pets’ health—or lack thereof. Consequently, pet owners in general made more trips to the veterinarian on a consistent basis to have their companion animals checked out.
The end result has been an acceleration of the demand for Veterinary products and services throughout the country and around the world. This, in turn, has created a need for practices and organizations to hire new employees to keep up with this greater demand. This is why there are so many veterinarian jobs now available in the employment marketplace and why there will be many more in the near (and quite possibly) distant future.

In the meantime, though, there are other steps you can take to set yourself up for success. The first step is to send your resume to The VET Recruiter so that we can consider you for one (or more) of our veterinarian jobs. We will, of course, assess your skills and experience in determining whether or not you would be a good fit for one of our client’s open positions.
The second step is to complete our online profile. Your profile also helps us to assess your candidacy for one of our client’s jobs. You may be actively looking for a new job or you may just be passively seeing what’s available in the job market. Either way, it pays to be on a recruiting firm’s “radar” so you can be kept in mind when the right opportunity comes along.
The third step is to tell us about your career goals. We want to know how you want to grow your career and the steps you’d like to take to get where you want to go. This helps us to build rapport with you as a candidate, and it’s a good idea to build a relationship with an experienced recruiting firm that knows what you want—both in a good job and also in a great career.
At The VET Recruiter, we look forward to supporting your career in one of two ways:
- When the time is right, we can help you to find new veterinarian jobs, or
- We can help you to recruit talented people for your organization and to fill your open veterinarian jobs with those people.
