3 Reasons to Always Have Your Resume Ready

There’s no doubt that you’re busy, and there’s probably a rather good chance that you believe you’re too busy to give the proper amount of attention to your resume.

“Why bother?” you might be saying.  “My job is secure.  There’s no reason to update my resume.”

As we have discussed numerous times in this blog (and also in our newsletter), the best time to take advantage of a new career opportunity is when you already have a good job.  That’s because you’re working from a position of strength instead of from a position of weakness.

In other words, don’t wait until you don’t have a job before you starting looking for one.

In this case, though, we’re not talking about “actively” looking for a new job, but rather “passively” looking for one.  That means keeping your eyes and ears open for new opportunities, and just as importantly, being ready to take action if such an opportunity appears.

With that in mind, below are three reasons to always have your resume ready:

  1. You never know when an opportunity will present itself.  It may sound like a cliché, but it’s absolutely the truth.  You’ve probably heard stories of friends and/or colleagues who have found great new jobs when they weren’t even looking for one.
  1. Consistently updating your resume helps ensure that you won’t omit something important.  After a while, everything can become a blur.  Updating your resume at regular intervals can help slow down that blur, at least long enough to document new accomplishments.
  1. It helps give you an edge when pursuing an opportunity.  Speed is everything during a job search, regardless of whether it’s “active” or “passive.”  When it’s time to move, you have to move quickly to make sure that your resume is in front of the company officials responsible for making hiring decisions.

Keep in mind that most of the people that we’ve placed as a recruiting firm were not necessarily looking for a new job, but were motivated to make a move for something better than what they currently had.  All they needed was the opportunity.

We presented that opportunity, they were ready to take advantage of the opportunity, and that’s why they got the job and enjoyed the next step in their career path.

Are you ready?

We help support careers in one of two ways: 1. By helping find the right opportunity when the time is right, and 2. By helping recruit top talent for the critical needs of organizations.  If this is something you would like to explore further, please send an email to stacy@thevetrecruiter.com.
